I did my routine visits to the parents over the last few days, and during my assessment of tutors.ae powered by Amourion students from their homes, I noticed that one student was struggling with AP English practice essay. This was from a family from Al Mankhool, a reputable residential neighbourhood in the Bur Dubai area located close to Al Karama. The student's individual paragraphs were decent. However, the essay was disjointed. Her parents wondered how an essay that had good paragraphs could not be coherent. During the ongoing Assessment, I emphasised that tutors.ae knows the lines of reasoning that run between the essay, paragraph claims, evidence and commentary in an AP English response. While in that context, the parents asked me the following:
Dr Anil Khare: A line of reasoning in AP English is the logical progression that links the thesis to the claims and evidence that are built throughout the essay. You should build up in each paragraph, rather than begin an argument again in each one.
Dr Anil Khare: The ability to sequence claims in a meaningful way and demonstrate how each new idea builds on the previous one helps students to see how paragraphs connect. Transitions are useful, but logical progression is more important than the use of transition words.
Dr Anil Khare: A paragraph that is not substantive in the way that it supports the main idea of the essay will detract from the quality of the work. AP English values logical thinking, not a list of singular observations.
Dr Anil Khare: Each analytical body paragraph should support the thesis or build the general argument of the essay. If the relationship is not explained in the paragraph, it might require revision and/or elimination.
Dr Anil Khare: Students can plan rapidly by drawing a defensible thesis and making short notes for the claim, evidence and analytical purpose for each paragraph.
